Alcohol: Reduce the Abuse
06.12.10
EVERY six hours someone
in Ireland dies from an alcohol-related illness.
That is the stark finding of Moville community group
Let's Talk Drink who have just launched a new
awareness card.
The handy-sized card carries helpful telephone
numbers for anyone concerned about their own or
someone else's drinking. The contact numbers include
those of the AA and Al Anon.
"Alcohol in itself is not bad. It can be good for
your health and enjoyable in moderation. It is the
overuse of alcohol and what people choose to do when
they are under the influence of too much alcohol
that concerns us,” said a Let's Talk Drink
spokesperson.
The group is working in Moville to raise awareness
about the harm alcohol can do both to the
individual, their family and the community. They
want to promote the idea of protecting people from
alcohol related harm. To convey this message, the
slogan on their new card is 'Alcohol: Reduce the
Abuse'. |

It was launched in
Moville and is available in the health centre,
shops, churches, restaurants, pubs and community
organisations throughout the Foyleside town.
"Abuse and overuse of alcohol are factors in many of
the problems that every community faces such as
crime, suicide and traffic accidents," added the
spokesperson.
"We hope that people will pick up the card and put
it in their pocket, to keep it safe in case they
come across someone who needs help."
The group's research reveals that in 2006/2007
alcohol was a factor in 41% of all cases of
deliberate self-harm and suicide. For more
