Council backs motion to end VRT

SINN Féin has welcomed
Donegal County Council's unanimous support yesterday
for a motion calling on the Government to end
Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT).
Cllr Pádraig MacLochlainn's motion will now be
passed to councils across the State for further
backing.
Speaking after his motion was passed, Cllr
MacLochlainn said: “I think that it is only fitting
that Donegal County Council is to be the first
council to call for the abolition of VRT. We have
suffered from the effects of the partition of our
island more than most and this tax only reinforces
partition. |

“The facts are that the
European Commission and a recent report on the
European Single Market conducted on behalf of EU
Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, have only
last month expressed serious concerns about what
they term a double taxation and are either
investigating its legality or calling for it to
end.“
Cllr MacLochlainn said the Government could not, on
the one hand, “preach“ about Ireland's
responsibilities to Europe while, on the other,
flout its responsibilities.
“They should not wait for the European Commission to
shut down this tax. They should take the initiative
themselves, be fair to the Irish people, and do the
right thing,“ added Cllr MacLochlainn. |
