Public veggie plot for Carndonagh 23.02.09

A GROUP of people living in Carndonagh are blazing a trail for vegetable growing in the peninsula after being given an allotment by Donegal County Council. The allocation to the residents of Convent Road, Carn, was revealed by Green candidate Sheenagh McMahon who called for more public allotments throughout the peninsula.
Ms McMahon said allotments would "encourage people to start growing their own fruit and vegetables and help reduce the cost of their weekly basket".
"There are several benefits to establishing allotment plots in our local towns. Firstly, there has been a steady increase in the number of people interested in growing their own food but not everyone has the land to do so," she said.
"It is also a much greener option than buying fruit and vegetables which

have been imported and have, as a result, incurred a lot of air miles." Ms McMahon is running for a seat on Buncrana Town Council and on the Inishowen Electoral Area of Donegal County Council. She called on Buncrana Town Council to allocate a particular nine-acre site in the town as allotment space. "This is something positive. Let's stop looking at what we can't do and see what we can do to reduce the cost of our weekly spend," she added.
