CARDONAGH Community
Library has taken delivery of books about the
teachings of Amma 'the Hugging Mother'. The books
were presented by Simone and Emma McLaughlin,
Inishowen members of Amma's youth group AYUD.
Librarian Carmel Barron said there had been a big
demand for information about the spiritual charity
worker whose real name is Mata Amritanandamayi. “We
have had lots of people in looking for books about
Amma. There seems to be a genuine interest in who
she is and what she does.”
Amma has endeared herself to millions of people
around the world through her humanitarian, health
and education projects. She is also famous for her
legendary hugs that leave many, according to
reports, with an overwhelming sense of unconditional
love and wellbeing.
Over the last 30 years she has hugged an estimated
26 million people worldwide including Ireland where
she visits every Autumn. |

The books donated by
Emma and Simone include a biography of Amma as well
as teachings on such topics as universal truth, love
and compassion. Local Amma devotee Mary Noone said
she hoped the books may help Inishowen people and
"give direction in these challenging times". |
“Amma’s teachings do
not try and convert people but they can help deepen
and strengthen your own faith," said Mary.
“Amma has set up many wonderful educational and
healthcare schemes in India including projects to
try and reach the poorest of the poor." Look out for
Mary, along with local Amma group volunteers, who
will be fundraising for Amma’s African Project at
the upcoming International Sheep Shearing Festival
in Burt on May 30 and May 31.
"Since her visit to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya,
Amma has pledged an orphanage for the local street
children and every penny we raise from selling
Indian food and snacks over the weekend will go to
this project.
"All the food will be donated and prepared and
served by volunteers, so by having your lunch or a
snack with us, you will be supporting orphans and
homeless, vulnerable children in Kenya.” |
