New Inishowen names on Book of
Honour

First World War dead
A NUMBER of new names from Inishowen will appear in
the fifth edition of the County Donegal Book of
Honour which has a list of Donegal men and women who
were killed in the First World War.
The book produced by the group A Journey of
Remembering - Island of Ireland Partnership, was
the brainchild of former Donegal North East TD Paddy
Harte and the first edition was launched in 2002 by
Minister for the Environment at the time Noel
Dempsey.
The Journey of Remembering organisation was set up
to encourage all local authorities on the island of
Ireland to search in their own areas, for the names
of all those who lost their lives in the First World
War and to record their names on a town by town
basis.
Mr Harte set up the organisation after he had
visited the cemeteries of the Somme and Flanders.
While there, he had recognised from the many names
on the headstones and monuments, a great many of
Irish descent, which he felt had been forgotten.
The Donegal book was a pilot project and similar
books have since been produced in other counties,
however quickly after the first edition of the book
was published, information came to light regarding
others whose names had not been included. |

Since then the book has
undergone a number of revisions and a new list of
names has been sent to the War Graves Commission as
the fifth edition of the book gets ready for
publication.
We expect the book to go to print later this month
and we are still anxious for more information on
those whose names will be included in the next
edition.
Mr Harte said the book aims to tell the names of all
the Donegal casualties of the First World War.
It is equally important to name the parents and
family where each soldier came from, particularly
the maiden name of the mother which brings another
family into the story, he added. Those whose names
