‘Boy Racers’ fail to stop for
Gardai
06.03.09
THE lives of innocent
road users in Inishowen are being put at risk by
young ‘boy racers’ driving recklessly across various
parts of the peninsula in recent weeks, Buncrana
based sergeant Danny Devlin has said.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent, Sergeant
Devlin confirmed that two incidents had occurred
last weekend where drivers failed to stop for Gardai
who had arrived on the scene following reports of
reckless driving. |
|
“We had two incidents
in the Buncrana area last weekend, but this is not a
problem confined to the Buncrana area, it is
happening across the peninsula and it is an area of
major concern.”
The Buncrana-based sergeant said that drivers who
failed to stop for Gardai were putting not just
their own lives at risk, but also the lives of other
road users.
“This is an area of concern in recent weeks and I
would urge parents to take greater responsibility
and know where their young people are, especially if
these young people drive.”
The local sergeant said that parents |
should be especially
aware if they are away for a weekend that young
people might be tempted to take a car out on the
road.
“It is very important that parents are more vigilant
in relation to alowing access to cars for young
drivers because in recent weeks many of these young
drivers have been driving recklessly and then
fleeing from the Gardai. Their behaviour on the road
can be very dangerous and they are putting lives at
risk.”
Sergeant Devlin also suggested that parents should
insist that youngsters looking to drive should take
proper lessons from a qualified instructor.
“It is much better for young people to learn how to
drive properly and I would urge parents to make sure
if they have young people going on the road that
they have been given proper lessons before they have
access to a vehicle,” he concluded.
