Culdaff left out of broadband loop
29.01.09
A LOCAL election
candidate is seeking clarification as to when
Gleneely and Culdaff will get broadband internet
access. Fianna Fáil's Charlie McConalogue welcomed
the recent Government promise to bring broadband to
100% of homes and businesses throughout the country.
Within North Inishowen, the four district electoral
divisions to be covered by the scheme wil be Malin,
Ardmalin, Carthage and Dunaff.
But Mr McConalogue is concerned about the omission
of Culdaff and Gleneely from the scheme.
"It is not clear from the information provided, how
and when the area served by the Gleneely and Culdaff
telephone exchanges are to be connected to broadband
internet," he said. |
|
"Eircom have stated
that they do not plan to upgrade the Culdaff and
Gleneely telephone exchanges for provision of
broadband internet access and have informed the
Department of Communications that the area should be
considered for inclusion in the National Broadband
Scheme. However, the National Broadband Scheme
announced last week does not include plans to cover
the Culdaff and Gleneely exchange areas."
The local election candidate has written to both the
Minister for Communications |
Eamon Ryan TD and
Eircom asking how and when the Culdaff and Gleneely
areas will be connected to broadband internet.
"Culdaff and Gleneely along with Linsfort are the
only exchanges in North Inishowen not currently
enabled for Broadband internet according to Eircom.
"However, the Linsfort exchange is scheduled to be
upgraded by Eircom before the end of 2009 bringing
broadband internet to homes in the area."
Mr McConalogue said it was imperative that
everywhere in Inishowen had broadband in the near
future.
"Plans for Gleneely and Culdaff must now be
clarified quickly. Broadband internet delivery is
essential to the future economic and community
development of Inishowen and time must not be lost
in ensuring it is brought to homes, businesses and
communities across the peninsula," he said. |
