Another crash at Cockhill blackspot 18.08.09

GARDAI in Buncrana are investigating another accident at the Cockhill Bridge blackspot. The crash at the notorious junction happened on Saturday around 3pm between a black Ford Focus car and a lorry. Sergeant Danny Devlin said the direction each vehicle was travelling at the time, was subject to the investigation. However, it is understood one of the vehicles was exiting the junction at the time of the collision.
A Garda officer directs traffic following Saturday's accident between a lorry and car at Cockhill Bridge.
"Nobody was injured and no-one required medical treatment but there was material damage done," said Sgt Devlin.
Saturday's crash follows an incident earlier this month when an unidentified heavy goods vehicle caused extensive damage to the bridge before driving off.
The partially-demolished wall was left in a dangerous state and had to be urgently repaired by a Donegal County Council contractor.
It prompted further calls for the bridge to be made safe with Cockhill-based County Councillor, Rena Donaghey demanding that the old bridge be replaced with a modern crossing. There have also been persistent calls from members of Buncrana Town Council for the bridge to be replaced. These calls intensified after the keys to a new housing scheme were allocated and the number of young families in the area increased.
