Buncrana gets its running shoes on
25.05.09
THE North West will get
its running shoes on this Wednesday, May 27, for the
ever-popular Buncrana 5K.
The Furey Insurances 5K Series, organised by the
City of Derry Athletics Club, is now in its ninth
year.
Started in Derry in 2000 by former Sparta AC
chairman Malcolm McCausland, the race organisers
hope to encourage non club runners to compete in
local road races. While originally held in Derry
city, it branched out to Inishowen in 2004.
The annual Buncrana race has since become known
among runners as one of the fastest 5Ks in the North
West. |
"The reason for the
speed of the course is not that it’s short - we know
how to measure a course - but that it is mostly run
in a straight line with only one turn. The slight
rise at the 4km mark, rewards the athletes with a
final kilometre that is all slightly downhill,"
explained one of the organisers, Eoghan Furey.
"This was emphasised in 2007, when Kevin Seaward of
St Malachy’s set the current blistering course
record of 14.44. Each summer a large number of
runners find that their fastest time of the year
comes from Buncrana."
Buncrana teacher Pauric McKinney, |
|
two-time winner,
Diarmuid Grant and Helena Crossan are seen as among
the best hopes for Inishowen.
"If you fancy a good wee blast on the 27th come down
to Buncrana,", added Eoghan. Registration is from
6.15pm at the local Leisure Centre with the race
starting at 7.30pm. |
