Cuts in politician perks welcomed 09.04.09

DONEGAL North East T.D., Deputy Niall Blaney said the tough Budget was "necessary to ensure swift economic recovery". Deputy Blaney said Ireland was going through one of the most difficult economic periods in its history. “First and foremost it is vital that we restore Ireland’s competitiveness so that we are ready to take advantage of all opportunities that are presented to us when the world economy recovers.” He said Tuesday's Budget aimed to do this through its six-step plan of renewal to include reduced spending, increased taxes and banking measures to restore the country's reputation abroad.

Deputy Blaney particularly welcomed the measures introduced in relation to Oireachtas members’ salaries and expenses. "It is important that we lead by example and it is only right that savings possible are made across the board in every Government department." Among the new measures relating to Oireachtas members’ salaries are:

*A 10% reduction in all expenses other than mileage where a 25% reduction has already taken place. *Payments to the chairs of Oireachtas committees halved and payments to committee vice chairs and whips scrapped. *TDs will no longer receive long service payments or increments. *Former ministers will not receive pensions while they are still serving as TDs or senators. *TDs and Senators who avail of paid leave of absence as teachers will not longer be able to keep the difference between their teaching salary and the cost of employing a replacement.
