Denver storms to athletics gold 10.12.09

TOOBAN youngster Denver Kelly won the All-Ireland U11 cross-country title after putting in a storming performance in Coleraine on Sunday.
“Denver came to win and he was absolutely outstanding,” said Finn Valley coach Patsy McGonagle. “He held his nerve in the early stages, got into the lead at halfway and in the final 300m put the head down and headed for home taking no prisoners. He drove up the hill and was never going to be caught.
“I have rarely seen a runner as determined as this blond boy from Tooban, he was simply outstanding and is a real prospect for the future.”
Denver’s win bridged an eight year gap back to Donegal’s last success at the grade when Ryan McDaid, also from Burnfoot, won the national title. Ryan was in attendance on Sunday and he warmed up the Finn Valley youngsters beforehand and would have been delighted to see his young brother Charles join Denver on the winning Donegal team that finished some 70 points ahead of nearest challengers Galway.
It was a hugely successful weekend for the Kelly clan with Denver’s sister
