Inishowen jobless hits 4,000 09.02.09

An extra 550 more people signed on in Inishowen in January as unemployment spirals to an "horrific" 4,000 in the peninsula.
CSO figures released on Friday show that those signing on for dole more than doubled in just one year in Inishowen from 1,928 in January 2008 to more than 3,951 in January 2009. Inishowen county councillor, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn reiterated his party's call for Tánaiste Mary Coughlan to urgently convene a meeting of the social partners and political parties in the county.
He said they must immediately agree a strategy for the economic recovery of Donegal.
“We cannot just stand by any longer and abandon one-in-three workers in Inishowen and one-in-four workers across this county to unemployment.
"We have to give hope. We have to send a message out loud and clear that this county and its people can and will turn this economic disaster around," said Cllr MacLochlainn.
“Along with Senator Pearse Doherty, I am stating very clearly that the

Sinn Féin party in Inishowen and Donegal are willing to give leadership and play our part in a collective effort with the other political parties, business organisations and trade unions."
He said the collective effort would also have to involve farming organisations, community development groups, local authorities, educational institutions and state agencies in a bid "to tackle this crisis head on".
"The Tánaiste now needs to finally declare her intentions. That is the least that the people of this county deserve," added the Buncrana-based councillor.
