JOE Mulholland’s reign
as Donegal Person of the Year 2008 is coming to an
end and the organisers of the event are now on the
lookout for a worthy successor. The Donegal
Association is now seeking nominations for the
Donegal Person of the Year 2009. The criteria is as
follows: the nominee has to have been born in Co
Donegal and they must have brought honour to their
native county at a local, national or international
level. Any person or group may nominate a candidate
or a number of candidates.
"We would like to congratulate Joe for his hard work
and for representing The Donegal Association at many
functions. This prestigious position which has been
filled with distinction by many very worthy
recipients since 1978 is now a much sought-after
accolade," said a spokesperson.
Past recipients are: Fr. James McDyer; Larry Smyth;
Dermott Walsh; Donal K. O’Boyle; Aine Ni Giolla
Bhride; Willie Joe Cunningham; Canon Tommy Doherty;
Peter McLean; Danny McDaid; Eamonn Doherty; Fergus

The winner will take the accolade at The Donegal
Association’s annual banquet in the Burlington
Hotel, Dublin, on Saturday, March 6, 2010. Closing
date for nominations is Monday, November 30, 2009
and the formal announcement will be made on Tuesday,
January 26, 2010 in the Regency Hotel. "You have
only six weeks to send in your nominations. It is
always very exciting, especially if the person is
from your own local area," added the spokesperson.
