Border boost for Foyle Ferry  02.11.09

THE Lough Foyle ferry has received a boost following a pledge to support the service from the North West Region Cross Border Group.
The commitment came at the group's AGM in Derry's Guildhall on Friday, attended by a number of public representatives including Inishowen Sinn Féin Councillor Pádraig MacLochlainn.
The Buncrana-based councillor and his Sinn Féin colleagues told the meeting the ferry was currently operating under a major level of uncertainty.
"I'm very happy that along with my party colleague, Mayor of Limavady Borough Council Cathal Ó hOisín, we raised the matter of the degree of uncertainty in respect of this critical piece of infrastructure. We received the backing of the group, consisting of elected members from right across the five council areas that make up the region," said Cllr MacLochlainn.
"We intend to pursue the ongoing provision of this service that has proven so vital to the social economy and tourism product, not only in the Donegal and Limavady Council areas but right along the whole north and west coast of Ireland."
Cllr MacLochlainn said he hoped the required funding would soon be forthcoming.
The Foyle Ferry leaving Greencastle.
"We would hope to secure funding from the Dáil and Assembly as well as possibly the Interreg IVA programme so that this service, which to date has carried over 2 million passengers and upwards on 70,000 vehicles annually, will be allowed to continue and expand. We appreciate the support of councillors from every political persuasion and indeed the work already carried out by our councils' officers."
