Sickening scenes of fly-tipping 27.05.09

GREEN Party members in Carndonagh were horrified after discovering sickening scenes of illegal fly-tipping near Sliabh Sneacht in recent days.
The members who walk regularly in the area, say while the problem has always been there it has become much worse since the recent introduction of recycling fees at Carn Public Amenity Centre.
“We often walk up here and there has always been some dumping. But it has been getting worse lately. And it’s not just here. It’s everywhere you go," they said in a statement.
And Carndonagh Green member, Vincent Treanor visited the amenity centre on Saturday and found no other customers
“It used to be that you could hardly get parked here on a Saturday afternoon. Now it’s like a ghost town. It seems a bit pointless bringing in charges if it means no-one turns up," he said. Meanwhile, their candidate for the local elections, Sheenagh McMahon said the charges were "clearly not working”.
“We have seen with our own eyes the rise in illegal dumping. We have seen the recycling centre in Carndonagh practically deserted. The small amount of revenue being brought in will be more than wiped out by the cost of cleaning up this mess in our local beauty spots," said Ms McMahon.
"It’s time for a rethink. Ideally these centres should remain free, as they always were. Another issue is the recycling wheelie bins. It is crazy that they are the same price as the ordinary bins. People have no incentive to recycle.
"The recycle collection should be cheaper than the normal one. If elected to Donegal County Council I will do all in my power to restore common sense to these issues," she added.
