Two gardai hurt in Lisfannon crash 14.12.09

TWO gardaí were injured, one seriously, in a two-vehicle crash near Buncrana in the early hours of yesterday. The accident happened around 1.30am at Lisfannon between a Garda car and another vehicle. The driver was the sole occupant of the civilian vehicle.
All three were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital where one of the gardai was described last night as in a serious condition.
Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said: "These two gardaí were injured while out in service of the community. I hope that both of them make a full recovery."
In accordance with procedure, the Garda Ombudsman Commission has been called in to investigate the accident. Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the collision and they may contact Buncrana garda station on 074 9320540. Alternatively, anyone with information can contact the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station. The accident was the second in a matter of hours in the Fahan area. There were long tailbacks on the main Buncrana to Derry road earlier on Saturday evening following a two-vehicle collision on the approach to Fahan village shortly after tea-time. The emergency services were called to the scene and traffic heading to and from Buncrana was diverted. The road reopened several hours later.
