Carn student shortlisted in St Patrick’s Day competition

CARNDONAGH Community School student Anita Davenport has been shortlisted in the final of a competition to design the doodle that will be hosted on the Google website on St Patrick’s Day.
Culdaff girl Anita won the Donegal competition for first, second and third year secondary school students and joins 100 other finalists from across the country in a public vote to decide the overall winner.
Anita Davenport with her art teacher Pauline McDermott. “I did it in 15 minutes,” an excited Anita, a former student at Bocan National School, explained last week. “I did it at home but on behalf of the school.” The overall winner will win a €10,000 technology grant for her or his school. “I’ll be getting a goodie bag and a framed version of my design from Google, as well as an invite to their headquarters in Dublin.”
Proud dad Brian said Anita has a big interest in art and design. “She’s a very good scholar, much more interested in school that I ever was,” he quipped.
Multi-talented Anita recently featured in
Carndonagh CS school musical and counts hip-hop dancing and traditional music – where she plays the flute and accordion – among her hobbies.
“I only got the word that I’d got through last week, so I’ve been trying to get my friends to vote early and vote often,” Anita said. Anita'a eye-catching design
Four other local students were shortlisted for the competition, namely, Scoil Mhuire students Orla O’Hagan, Jessica McKinney, Kirstin O’Reagan and Lucy McGrory.
Unfortunately, the girls weren’t successful in being shortlisted for the national finals but you can cast your vote for Anita’s design at www.google.ie/doodle4google .
Voting ends at midnight on Monday next, 16 February.
