Greencastle Gwen's off to Peru 27.04.09

by Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent

A 22-year old Greencastle woman is aiming to raise around €5,000 over the next few months for the Children in Crossfire charity before heading off on a trek through Peru towards the Inca city of Machu Picchu.
Gwen Doherty has in the past, abseiled down the side of the Europa Hotel in Belfast for Children in Crossfire and says she likes to get involved in helping charities whenever she can. Children in Crossfire supports local initiatives that improve the daily lives for people living in some of the world's poorest communities - for instance, greater income-earning opportunities, improved health facilities, or clean water supplies.
Gwen Doherty “I have raised money for a number of charities in the past and did the abseil, but I’ve never been on an overseas fund raising venture yet.”
Before she heads off to Peru in November, Gwen has planned a number of fund raising events and has a couple more in the pipeline - even if she hasn’t worked out the dates yet.
“We’re going to start with a table quiz in the Town Clock in Moville on April 23rd and there’s an Anne Summers night planned for May 22nd.”
And the fund raising will continue in June with a charity football match planned in
Buncrana on 5th June, a game that will be followed by a quiz in the Atlantic Bar.
“I do some pole dancing and I might try to get that fitted in to the fund raising somewhere, anything at all that will bring a crwod and help raise some money,” she said. The charity worker said the trek through Peru from November 16-25 will increase in difficulty as it progresses.
“The longest day will see us on a 12 hour trek, but each day will also see us increase in altitude so hopefully that will stop us getting sick.”
The ‘’us’ she refers to is the group who will head off to Peru on the fund raising venture, but as yet Gwen knows none of them.
“I’m not going out there with anybody as a buddy, there will be a group going and I’m looking forward to meeting up with them.”
Apart from the planned fund raising events, she is also hoping that family, friends and local businesses will also get involved in sponsoring her for the charity.
“I’ll have a number of other events planned in the weeks ahead and hopefully people will help support this worthy charity,” she said.
