WHALE watching at Fort
Dunree and free guided walks through the monastic
village of Fahan are just some of the events planned
for National Heritage Week in the peninsula. The
week runs from August 22 - August 30 and will also
include birdwatching at Inch Nature Reserve and an
open air Mass in Carrowmenagh.
The whale watching will take place on Sunday, August
23 from 2.30pm until 5pm. The event will comprise a
guided land-based whale and dolphin watch at the
local military museum with local wildlife expert
Dermot McLaughlin. Admission is a €3.50 car parking
fee. Meanwhile, the walks in Fahan will take place
place over six days. The one-and-a-half hour walks
will take place on Saturday, August 22 from 11.30am
to 1pm; August 23, from 2.30pm to 4pm; August 26
from 11.30pm to 1pm; August 28 from 11.30am to 1pm;
August 29 from 11.30am to 1pm and August 30 from
7.30pm to 9pm. Fahan Community Council's Peter
Gurrie has organised the walks which will take in
the historic St Mura's Graveyard, Agnes Jones'
grave, the home of Cecil F. Alexander and the grave
of 78 Laurentic victims. The meeting place is the
car park of the old St Mura's Graveyard. The walks
are suitable for children and have partial
