Take a walk on the wild side
20.07.09
PEOPLE interested in
the medicinal qualities of some of Inishowen's
native wild plants are invited to go on a 'Edible
Herb Walk' with expert herbalist Judith Hoad.
The walk, hosted by Transition Inishowen, will take
place in Greencastle on Saturday, August 1.
Judith Hoad, a retired western herbalist, has been
walking the lanes, fields and gardens of Ireland for
nearly 30 years, introducing people to the medicinal
qualities of wild plants. |
“The origins of herbal
medicine are primarily wild plants. Very rarely are
any of them cultivated,” explains Judith. “I am very
keen for everyone to have access, through knowledge
gleaned from any reliable sources, to the benefits
to be derived from these plants. With the world
domination of food seeds by only one or two
multinational corporations, it is going to become
important in the future to know what is available in
the wild for both food and medicine."
Judith's walks are full of anecdote and memorable
stories about the plants, what they do, how they can

treated. She debunks
some of the myths that have grown up around some of
them in modern times.
Transition Inishowen co-founder Kathleen O'Hara
Farren added: “One of the most popular workshops at
the Inishowen Summer Gathering 2005 was Judith's
'Wondering through the Weeds'. I'm delighted to
welcome her back here to share her knowledge." The
walk takes place from 10am to 2pm and costs €10
including lunch. To book, contact Kathleen on 93
