THE tightly-knit community of Glengad is in mourning
following the sudden death of 22 year-old Martin
McLaughlin (Crua) on Saturday.
“The whole community here is numbed by his death,”
said Patrick Houton, a building contractor and
former employer of Mr McLaughlin. “The scenes in the
wake house are heart-breaking.” Mr McLaughlin had a
history of health problems, and his father died
prematurely at the age of just 34. Martin is
understood to have attended a NowDoc surgery on
Saturday afternoon complaining of feeling unwell
and, having left the surgery, he collapsed and died
before returning home. “He was a lovely fella who
would always help out where he could,” Mr Houton
continued. “He worked for me for six years but gave
up owing to health reasons. Recently, he had been
helping his aunt Sheila Doherty who was bereaved
last October.”
A number of events were cancelled in the Malin and
Malin Head areas on Sunday as a mark of respect.
Glengad United’s FAI Junior Cup game was postponed,
while a function at the Malin GAA clubhouse, where
Martin had worked on a voluntary basis prior to its
opening last summer, was cancelled. For death
