16.06.09
POLL topper Lee
Tedstone was last night elected as Mayor of Buncrana
at the first annual general meeting of the new
council. The Fine Gael councillor won 417 first
preference votes, a stunning return for a first time
candidate.
Cllr Tedstone (30), managing director of Nvolve, a
Letterkenny-based software company takes over from
outgoing mayor Dermot McLaughlin. |
The new mayor has
identified increased tourism facilities and improved
broadband infrastructure among his priorities.
The Deputy Mayor will be Fine Gael’s Peter
McLaughlin.
Buncrana Town Council is expected to continue its
long-standing convention of rotating the mayoral
position amongst all parties. As the biggest party,
Fine Gael will have two mayors over the five year
term of the Council, with Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin and
Independents having one mayor each.
Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil county councillors will meet
later today to discuss their strategy |

ahead of the first
meeting of the new county council in Lifford on
Friday. The party has approached all other parties
and independents to establish whether they want to
enter a pact.
Letterkenny councillor Ciaran Brogan is expected to
be appointed as Fianna Fáil whip, with veteran
councillor Sean McEniff chairman of the group.
