"Ask Fruit of Loom workers about task forces"
12.01.09
A BUNCRANA councillor
is urging the workers losing their jobs at Dell in
Limerick to recall the "empty promises" given to
2,000 Fruit of the Loom workers in Inishowen in the
late 1990s.
Cllr Paul Bradley said he was "sickened" to hear
talk of another task force for Limerick.
"The Taniste Mary Coughlan is talking about setting
up a task force for Limerick and the Mid-West
region. This makes me sick to think that the promise
of another Task Force is any comfort to the
thousands that have lost their jobs," said the Fine
Gael councillor. |
"We have had our own
task force up here in Donegal. Set up after the loss
of 2,000 jobs in Fruit of the Loom. The report and
recommendations of the Donegal task force were never
implemented by the Fianna Fail Government.
"Therefore I would give a clear warning to the
people of the Mid-West region not to put too much
trust in any Task Force set up by Fianna Fail. It
may be more empty promises."
Cllr Bradley called for assistance for entrepreneurs
and small indigenous businesses. |

"Small and medium-sized
businesses are the back-bone of any economy. Fine
Gael is calling on the Government to recognise this
and offer incentives to secure the future of these
businesses."
Citing the 120,000 rise in unemployment nationally
in 2008, he reiterated Fine Gael's proposal for new
tax incentives in 2009.
"Fine Gael is proposing to waive PRSI payments in
2009 for all companies taking on new employees," he
said. Meanwhile, he called for a general election.
"Twenty years is too long for any political party to
remain in power in any democracy. I think it is now
clear to be seen that Fianna Fail have been in power
too long in this country.
"When the economy was going well Fianna Fail were
delighted to take all the credit. Now that the
economy has gone into recession they must be held
responsible. Where did all our money go?" he asked. |
