Sunday sees first
public performance by new choir
PARISHIONERS attending St Pius X Church in Moville
on Sunday will be singing and clapping in the aisles
as the new Moville Gospel Choir makes it debut.
The choir have been practising diligently under
co-ordinators Debbie Kelly and Frank Fiorentini
since late September and hold their final rehearsal
tonight.
Parish priest Fr Paddy O’Kane had established a
gospel choir in his previous parish in
Ballymagroarty and approached Debbie Kelly with a
view to setting up a similar choir in Moville.
“I find the music very uplifting, it’s part of the
joy of celebrating the liturgy,” Fr O’Kane said. “I
have heard the choir in rehearsal and they are as
good as any gospel choir I’ve heard anywhere else.
Everyone is welcome to come along and hear them on
Sunday.”
From an initial meeting at the parochial house
attended by fewer than a dozen, the choir has grown
to around 35 singers and eight musicians. “It
started off small, but has really snowballed as word
of mouth spread around the parish,” Kelly, a teacher
in Derry. “Everyone has been enthusiastic and
they’ve picked up the songs very quickly, but I’d
like to pay special tribute to Frank Fiorentini –
I’d be badly stuck without his help and guidance.”
“We have ten core songs, but we’re always learning
new material and we’re really looking forward to
Sunday,” Kelly continued. “I’ve always been involved
with traditional church choirs, so it has been quite
new for me but it’s been very exciting too.”
The Moville Gospel Choir will perform at 12 noon
Mass in St Pius X Church on Sunday next, and every
fortnight thereafter. |
