Doherty slates fellow senators

SINN Féin Senator
Pearse Doherty has hit out at his two fellow Donegal
senators for not supporting his proposed Seanad
amendments to the NAMA legislation. Senator
Doherty's amendments, if carried, would force banks
to lend to viable small and medium enterprises and
stop any home repossession for a period of two
years. He criticised Senator Brian O Domhnaill and
Senator Cecilia Keaveney for not supporting his
proposals.
“NAMA is deeply flawed and is, in my opinion, the
crime of the century. However, along with opposing
the Bill I have tried to ensure, if it is forced
through, that it would help the ordinary people. |
"I have done this with
two priorities in mind. First to get people back to
work by ensuring the banks begin lending to small
and medium enterprises and secondly, that it would
protect those that have fallen on harsh times by
ensuring that no bank that has been bailed out by
the taxpayer, would evict that same taxpayer from
their family home." He described the failure of the
Fianna Fail senators to support an amendment that
would protect families from eviction as
"despicable".
"Who can support giving €54 billion of taxpayers
money to banks, that over-lent |

to greedy developers,
while on the other hand rejecting my amendment that
would ensure that these same banks would not be
allowed to throw families out of their homes and
onto the streets."
Senator Doherty added: “Their actions tonight have
shown where their priorities lie - that is bailing
out bankers and developers while blocking support
for struggling families and small businesses.” |
