New Buncrana group for older
people
27.08.09
A NUMBER of volunteers
with Good Morning Inishowen, telephone link service
for elderly people, have decided to form a new
active retirement group for people in the greater
Buncrana area. The name of the new group is Buncrana
Go Active. It is set to start in the Autumn.
Buncrana Go Active will hold their first public
meeting in the Angling Centre on Monday the 7th of
September at 7.30pm.
The group was set up recently by a number of
enthusiastic 50+ men and women who were keen to
provide a range of activities for their peer group.
The aim of the group is to provide social,
educational, creative and recreational activities
for older people in Buncrana and the surrounding
areas. |
Secretary of the newly
formed group is Joe McGinley. He says the idea came
from looking at the work other active retirement
groups in Donegal.
A number of us went to Moville at the start of the
summer to hear the President of the National Active
Retirement Association address the Moville Active
Retirement group and we came away wanting to set up
a similar group in Buncrana. |

We spoke to Anne Gill,
the Project Co-Ordinator of Good Morning Inishowen,
to see how a group might be set up.
Already, funding has been sourced from the VEC for
classes in Art, Computers and Local History. These
will begin in September, subject to numbers.
The main purpose of the first public meeting is to
find out from prospective members what activities
they would be interested in.
Its important that we have a big turn out of older
people at this meeting. The interest has to be there
if Buncrana Go Active is to be a success.
It will also be an opportunity to become a member
and to sign up for the planned activities.
Activities suggested so far include guided walks,
digital photography, theatre visits, dancing, book
club, financial management, board games and quizzes.
The opening fee is 10.
Buncrana Go Active committee at present is Joe
McGinley (Secretary), Marian McAlinney (Chairperson)
and Bridget Hurley (Treasurer). There will be an
opportunity for new people to join the committee
this autumn. (Inishowen
