Over 40 to feel ‘pier pressure’ 10.04.09

by Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent

OVER FORTY thrill-seekers have already signed up for a bungee jump from Portmore Pier at Malin Head this weekend and organiser of the event Colm Kelly has said that even more may get to jump…if they're brave enough!
The Easter Monday event has captured the imagination of wanna-be jumpers from all over Inishowen and one man in his seventies has also made contact hoping he can join.
“There has been a great level of interest and the people who have signed up are from all over. There are a good number of people from in and around Malin Head, but there are people from all over, a good few from Carndonagh.”
According to Colm those lining up to jump will be aged between 16 to 50 years of age, with at least one exception.
“A man of 73 from Letterkenny made contact and is looking to jump. He has a doctor’s certificate and all saying he is fit to jump,” said Colm.
Monday’s fund-raiser has been organised by the local man in an effort to raise much-needed funds for the local Community Hall and he’s hoping that all those who have signed up for the event can bring in as much sponsorship as possible.
“The whole thing has been organised as a fund raiser for the local Community Hall and hopefully the money raised will go towards buting some new equipment for the young people of the area to use,” Colm said.
He added that, because the novel idea had captured the imagination, he was hopful that a substantial amount could be raised.
“I don’t think this is the first bungee jump ever in Inishowen, but it will be the first in Malin Head and I think there are plenty of people looking forward to the thrill of plunging over the water at Portmore Pier and making that 180 foot drop,” he said.
Hoping for a good day for the event, Colm is also keen to see as many locals as possible come out to view what should be an exciting spectactle.
“People should come out and see this, it will be good craic and if there are some free slots at the end there might even be the chance for others to make the jump on the day,” Colm added.
He also suggested that, if the day is a success, there is a possibility that a similar event might be organised in the area again, but admitted that it probably won’t be next year.
“I organised a skydive last year for the Red Cross and it was a big success and I think I’ll probably be looking at organising another skydive again next year,” Colm said.
Monday’s event is expected to get under way between noon and 1pm with those who have signed up to take part asked to come along to the pier before noon.
