Over €5,500 for primary schools 27.11.09

EVERY primary school in Inishowen will this week receive grants starting at €5,500 to carry out small-scale structural and mechanical works. The funding is being allocated under the Minor Works Grants scheme for 2009/2010. Senator Cecilia Keaveney welcomed the monies saying they would boost school budgets this winter.
"More than 3,200 primary schools across the country are to get grant payments amounting to €28 million over the coming days to carry out small-scale structural and mechanical works," said Senator Keaveney.

Senator Cecilia Keaveney pictured with Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe. "There will be €5,500 per school plus €18.50 per mainstream pupil and €74 per special needs pupil. So, for example, a 50-pupil school will get €6,425 and a 300-pupil school will receive over €11,000." The annual grant allows work to be carried out on the physical infrastructure of the school or its grounds, whether mechanical or electrical. It can also be spent on items such as furniture or educational equipment without the need for schools to deal directly with the Department of Education.
"This is a continuing investment by Government to modernise our school accommodation in a way that enhances the learning and working environment for pupils and teachers. I know Donegal schools will, as always, get good value out of the monies that are to be made ready for them to spend in the incoming days," added Senator Keaveney.
