Illies hit Cockhill for six 20.02.09

Illies Celtic 6 (Paul Doherty (2); Aiden Doherty; Paddy Doherty and Cathal Doherty (2)) Cockhill Celtic 0 by Gerard McLaughin, Inishowen Independent, at the Illies THIS was a game dominated by Dohertys. Illies’ first four goals were scored by the three Doherty brothers - Paul who scored twice, Aiden and Paddy and substitute Cathal Doherty added a further two. Right from the start the home team dominated possession and in truth they could of won by more but for some careless finishing. The front two for the home side gave the Cockhill defence a hard time all day long, the craft and experience of Paul Doherty was well complemented by the pace and trickery of Ciaran McDaid who gave the two visiting centre halves a hell of a lot to do. Illies took the lead in the first five minutes with their first attempt at goal. After a scramble in the box the away defence failed to clear their lines and Aiden Doherty pounced to head home from ten yards. This was just what Brendan McDaid would have wanted as it settled his team down and from then on they dominated possession of the ball and always looked in control of the game. |

Cockhill didn’t trouble
Noel McDermott in the Illies goal until 20 minutes in
when Mark Gillespie fired over from just outside the
box. Soon after this Illies made it two, Gavin Doherty
went on a rampaging run down the left and from his cross
Paul Doherty made no mistake from close range. Doherty should have made it three minutes later but he fired over when it was easier to score. Cockhill’s second chance of the half again fell to Mark Gillespie but he shot narrowly wide of goal as the visitors tried to get back into the game. They had another few half chances in a five minute spell which they dominated but could not get that all important goal to get them back into the game. The game was over as a contest soon after when Paul Doherty made it 3-0 following a great run and cross from Dominic Coyle. Five minutes later it was 4-0 when Paddy Doherty scored from all of 30 yards with a free kick that keeper Declan Caldwell will have nightmares about. but he somehow let it slip
under his body and the game was well and truly finished
as a contest. Trailing by four goals at the break, in fairness to the visitors they did improve in the second half and although they knew they were beaten they battled on to the very end. The first chance of the second half fell to Ciaran McDaid but his shot just clipped the post and went wide of the target. The first chance Cockhill could muster came from a Mark Gillespie free but he rattled the wall and the ball deflected harmlessly wide of McDermott’s goal. Another free for the away side this time by Stephen McLaughlin caused problems for McDermott but he saved with his feet and kept his clean sheet intact. The visitors’ best chance of the half fell to Jason Lyons but his shot was again well dealt with by McDermott who saved with his feet. Declan Caldwell in the other goal then went some way to making up for his earlier error saving smartly twice to keep the score at four. A fine passing move from the home side which began at the back led to the fifth goal when Paul Doherty crossed for Cathal Doherty who volleyed low to the net for what was the goal of the game. Cockhill still tried and were denied a consolation goal when Aaron McLaughlin saw his overhead kick headed off the line by Aiden Doherty who marshalled the Illies defence very well all day. The final goal of the game came again from substitute Cathal Doherty when he finished high to the roof of the net from 12 yards. Although 6-0 was a big scoreline it really could have been more but Brendan McDaid will still be quite satisfied with the result and he will be looking to push on and go all the way in this cup this season. Cockhill however will have to go back to the drawing board and concentrate their efforts on the league campaign.
