City United...4 (Gilmartin (2); Shannon; Rooney) Glengad United...0 by Keith O’Dwyer at Sean Fallon Park for Inishowen Independent A STRONG second half performance from Sligo Southern Hotel Super League side City United saw them find the net four times to win 4-0 against Inishowen League representatives Glengad United in their Umbro FAI Junior Cup 6th round game which was played in Sean Fallon Park on Sunday afternoon. In the third minute Glengad had a half chance when a through ball from Patrick McDermott found Terence Doherty but his shot was well saved by home keeper David Scanlon and John G McDermott fired the loose ball wide. City United dominated possession but failed to trouble the Glengad goal until the 44th minute when Lee Martin unleashed a shot that Michael McLaughlin tipped onto the crossbar. |

City had dominated the
first half but weren’t able to create many chances as
the Glengad defence held firm. All that changed two
minutes into the second half as City broke the deadlock.
Simon Gilmartin had a neat finish from inside the box
after he had been set-up by Keith Nibbs. City doubled
their lead three minutes later. Nibbs and Colin Fox
combined to play in Gilmartin and again he made no
mistake shooting home from just outside the six yard
box. Stung by going behind, Glengad pushed hard as they
searched for a way back into the game.First Patrick
Doherty went close as he capitalised on a slip up by the
home defence only to shoot off target. Soon after Paul
McGonigle nearly scored a fine individual effort as he
worked his way past the City defence and while his shot
beat City keeper David Scanlon it went across goal and
wide of the post. City then made sure of their place in
the next round as they scored their third in the 75th
minute. Good approach work from Lee Marshall saw him
pick out Gareth Kelly who slipped the ball into Gary
Rooney and he sent his resulting shot high past Glengad
keeper Michael McLaughlin. They added a fourth in the 80th minute as Marshall whipped a low ball from the left in behind the Glengad defence with substitute Glen Shannon on hand to turn the ball into the net. To their credit Glengad never let the heads drop and could have pulled a goal back soon after when Paul McDermott flicked the ball onto Terence Doherty who was denied by Scanlon. Doherty went close again just before full time as he got to the end of a cross from the right by Stephen McLaughlin but was unable to find the target.
