Glengad close in on Cockhill

Cockhill Celtic...0 Glengad United...2 (T. Doherty 26 mins; S. Porter (o.g.) 69 mins) by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent, at St Mary’s Park, Cockhill GLENGAD UNITED took a giant stride towards securing promotion to the Premier Division with comfortable 2-0 victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Cockhill Celtic. A superbly taken first half goal from the impressive Terry Doherty, and a second half own goal from Shaun Porter (under pressure from Alan Orr) was enough to see Liam McClean’s side move to within a point of Cockhill at the top of the table. Unbeaten in the league this season, Glengad have three games in hand on Cockhill and two in hand of third placed Illies. There was double cause celebration for manager Liam McClean as Cockhill are managed by his brother Sean. “As long as we keep winning we’ll keep the pressure on Cockhill at the top,” he said afterwards. |

Their first goal was a
superb individual effort from Terry Doherty. Ruairí
Doherty’s long throw from inside his own half carried on
the breeze and into the left corner. Terry Doherty got
away from his man and raced onto it, dribbling into the
box where his footwork carried him past two defenders
and his right-footed shot squirmed under Leo McColgan
and into the Cockhill net. McColgan will have been
disappointed to have let it go under his body, but
Doherty celebrated the strike with gusto. Terry Doherty also had a large part to play in his side’s second goal which came in the 69th minute. Cockhill right back Daniel Bonner did well to cut out a pass to the dangerous Alan Orr. But the rest of the defence was posted missing and Doherty pipped Bonner in the race to the loose ball. The Glengad striker nipped past Bonner along the endline and rounded keeper Leo McColgan, who had come off his line, before driving a low ball across the face of goal for fellow striker Alan Orr to tap in. Cockhill defender Shaun Porter got to the ball first, but unfortunately for him he bundled the ball over the line for an own goal. The 2-0 lead was no more than Glengad deserved, and if they had shown a little more composure in the final 20 minutes they might even have added to their tally. |

John G McDermott shot
straight at Leo McColgan nine minutes from the end after
good work by Terry Doherty and Paul McDermott, but the
best chance fell to Terry Doherty in the 83rd minute
when a superb crossfield pass from Jason Doherty allowed
him to spring the offside trap. He got through
one-on-one with Leo McColgan, the big keeper coming out
to the edge of his box, and nudged the ball past him
only for it to trickle inches wide. Outplayed by a more youthful and fitter team for most of the 90 minutes, Cockhill did create a number of good chances but they didn’t ask hard questions of Glengad keeper Michael McLaughlin. Their first chance came on 16 minutes when Eamon Porter played a clever ball into the box for Eamon Fullerton, who was steaming in from the left. Fullerton got his shot on target, but Michael McLaughlin saved and Aiden Porter skied the loose ball over the crossbar. After going behind on 26 minutes, Cockhill upped their game and Aiden Porter was unlucky when his free kick from just outside the penalty area skimmed the top of the bar on the half hour. Their best chance of the half came six minutes later. Kevin McDaid, who had a rare ould tussle with Glengad centre-halves Patrick Doherty and Patrick McDermott, found space in the box. He got a good shot off, but McLaughlin got down low to his left to make a fine save. John G McDermott shot over five minutes before the break after Orr nodded down a Ruairí Doherty long throw. Orr, making his first start for Glengad since signing from Moville at Christmas, had the ball in the net in first half injury time but the effort was ruled out for offside. Cockhill’s best move of the match came in the 61st minute. Eamon Porter played a ball wide to Shane McDaid who did well to spot the unmarked Kevin McDaid and knock a 30 yard pass to him. McDaid was 40 yards from goal and in acres of space, but as he ran towards goal the ball got caught under his feet giving the Glengad defence time to recover and the chance was lost. A quickly taken Cockhill free kick found Eamon Fullerton minutes later and his clever backheel found Shane McDaid in space but he drove narrowly wide. Glengad’s second goal came soon after that, and with that went any chance Cockhill had of getting anything from the game. Although the game was played in a good spirit, referee Charlie Doherty had cause to brandish three red cards before the end, with Cockhill’s Daniel Bonner and Shane McDaid and Glengad substitute Paul McDermott all taking early showers.
