Glengad Utd...0 Moville Celtic...1 (Kevin McDermott 74) By Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent, at Maginn Park CAPTAIN Kevin McDermott popped up with the all-important goal on Sunday night as Moville Celtic shocked First Division winners to claim the Top Four trophy, but in all honesty it was no less than they deserved. The Foylesiders were by far the slicker outfit throughout the game, but with no goals to show for their dominance of the possession for a long period of the game, they were always in danger of being hit with a sucker punch from a Glengad side who just never got into their stride. In the end it was McDermott who settled the Moville nerves, pouncing on a rebounded effort from Conor McLaughlin and rifling a shot past Michael McLaughlin in the Glengad goal to give Moville a lead with sixteen minutes left in the match. It was indeed fitting that Conor McLaughlin had a part to play in the goal, albeit a fortuitous one when he saw his shot deflected towards his captain. |

The Moville right back,
received a warm round of applause when he was named as
man of the match and it was a richly deserved plaudit
for a young player who showed composure on the ball, but
a steely determination in his defending that was called
upon on more than one occasion. Indeed he was the man in the right place at the right time for Moville just after they had taken the lead, nipping back onto the line and managing to clear away Ruairi Doherty’s goalbound effort. That really was the best that Glengad could offer in terms of a forceful attack following the Moville goal and while they huffed and puffed they never looked as if they would blow the Moville house down. Indeed the reserve League outfit not only looked |
sharper and more focused,
they were also more inventive and might have found the
net with a number of well-worked set plays that caught
Glengad cold more than once. The early stages were all nip and tuck as the sides tried to sound each other out under the blazing sunshine at Maginn Park. Shane Doherty headed over from a corner for Glengad in the 5th minute while Conor Lafferty fired a free-kick across the face of the goal for Moville in the 12th. Conor McLaughlin and Gearoid McQuillan linked well in the 19th minute to carve out an opening that saw McQuillan fire over the bar. McLaughlin then popped up inside his own box to snuff out a dangerous low cross from Ruairi Doherty before setting off on another surging run in the 31st minute that he pulled back to Christopher McGeoghan who had his shot blocked. A well worked free-kick in the 37th minute found Michael B Doherty but he blasted over the bar to the relief of the static Glengad defence. They were relieved again on the stroke of half time when Kevin McDermott raced clear down the left and fired in a cross that Conor Lafferty really should have put away but somehow managed to steer over the bar from close range. Chances were few and far between in the second half, but Moville continued to have the upper hand and might have broken the deadlock in the 65th minute when Darren Bredin sent Oran McDermott away but he saw his tame left foot shot easily saved. In the end it only took one chance to separate the sides and when Kevin McDermott’s strike rattled the back of the net it was hard to see the cup going anywhere but Moville. And that’s indeed where it headed seventeen minutes later, Glengad having no answer or no threat to a Moville side who were worthy winners on the night.
