Moville men march on

Convoy disappoint in
one-sided encounter
Moville...2-11
Convoy...0-7

A LATE goal saw Moville snatch victory from the jaws of
defeat in the first leg of this Junior Championship
first round tie, but Eddie Devine’s side needed no such
heroics against an underwhelming Convoy in the return
leg, played at Carrick Field on Friday evening.
The visitors, missing the influential Padraig Porter who
was sidelined with the latest in a long line of
injuries, ran Moville close in the first quarter but
collapsed completely in the second half.
These teams are in the thick of a cutthroat promotion
battle in Division Four involving at least six sides,
but on this evidence Convoy may struggle to be in
contention come the autumn. |
That this game lacked the
intensity characteristic of a championship match (last
weekend’s league offering on this ground when Naomh
Padraig (Iskaheen) were the guests had far more spice to
it) came as something of a surprise, given the recent
history between these sides.
David Shovlin opened the scoring with a free, but
Moville hit back with three unanswered scores, though it
should be noted they hit as many wides as points in the
first ten minutes.
Defences were on top with Liam Prunty and Martin McNamee
dominant for the visitors while Liam Mailey got no
change from Moville’s Donegal minor centre back Enda
Faulkner.
Another Shovlin free and a good score from full forward
Liam Mailey had Convoy back on level terms before
Shovlin’s third dead ball kick of the half on the
quarter hour restored the East Donegal side’s lead. It
was not to last.
A hitherto scrappy game was lit up by a move of genuine
quality in the 19th minute. Oran McDermott carried the
ball across the Convoy 45 and found Nigel McMonagle wide
on the left. The dynamic Moville attacker beat his man
for pace and ran toward goal then passed across goal for
Malachy McDermott to sweep first time past Emmet
Doherty.
The game might not have been so one sided had Convoy
taken either of the goal chances that came their way at
the end of the first half, but Thomas McHugh saw his
shot blocked by Kevin Coyle then Shovlin’s chip over
Maurice McGeady was grabbed in the square by Conor
O’Donnell. |

PoMoville mounted attack
after attack. Nigel McMonagle and Mark Henry rattled the
Convoy woodwork in quick succession.
Laurence McMullen stylish finish made it 1-6 to 0-5 four
minutes into the half, but from then on in it was
one-way traffic.
O’Hare did well to dispossess a Convoy back and Moville
were rewarded for his efforts with a Malachy McDermott
point, who missed out on an A grade only because of his
at times wayward free taking.
Nigel McMonagle, who caused at least as much havoc in
the Convoy back lines as his fellow Moville Celtic team
mate, then ran on to score and when Malachy McDermott
struck again suddenly the score was 1-10 to 0-5 and the
match effectively over.
McMonagle hammered the final nail into the Convoy coffin
with six minutes remaining, collecting from Conor
O’Donnell and turning effortlessly inside his marker
before finding the net with a measured shot beyond
Doherty’s dive.
Late points came from McHugh and McMullen when what
Convoy needed at this stage was goals. Gary Patton saw
red late on to cap a miserable evening for the visitors
who must now pick themselves up for the second half of
the league campaign.
Moville look well capable of fighting a war on two
fronts.
