Moville cruise to the final

Actually it probably would never even have been allowed to happen because of the gulf in class between the opponents. That said, there was nothing Moville could do really about the fact that their opponents provided such lightweight opposition on the day except perhaps concentrate on their own game and use the experience as an opportunity to sharpen up a little for next weekend’s final. The game as a contest was over within minutes yet the first two belonged to St. Eunan’s. They even fired in two wides in those first two minutes and for a while it looked as if they might have something to offer in terms of resistance, but it was really a very short while. Once Niamh McLaughlin fired over the bar following some good interplay in the third minute, the flow of traffic changed and for the next ten minutes St. Eunan’s barely even managed to get the ball out of their own half. |

The speed and movement of
the Moville forwards had the Eunan’s defence at sixes
and sevens and even if they did manage to kick the ball
up the field, it was inevitably gobbled up by the
Moville midfield or half-back line. And once they got the ball they looked immediately to get their team on the front foot, helped by magnificent running off the ball and showing for the ball from the half and full-forward lines. Quite simply St. Eunan’s had no answer as Moville’s fluid attacking display forced them onto the back foot and every little mistake was punished severely. Aisling Newtown finished off a fine move, taking a pass from Treasa Doherty in the 4th minute to give Moville a two point lead before a flood of goals. Treasa Doherty was instrumental in the first of those, recovering a ball on the end line and feeding it back to Anita Doherty who fired in with her left foot past the stranded Joanna Connolly. in to intercept and then
fed Aisling Newton who hammered to the back of the net. Two minutes later Treasa Doherty extended Moville’s lead even further when she beat the advancing Connolly to the ball and clipped a shot to the bottom corner of the net to make it 3-2 to no score in Moville’s favour. And things got worse for St. Eunan’s in the 9th minute when Niamh Hegarty’s shot dropped past Connolly to make it 4-2 to Moville without reply. Niamh Hegarty then pointed with a free in the 13th minute but the scores just kept on coming for Moville as the Letterkenny girls dropped their heads knowing this game was already well beyond them. Niamh McLaughlin whose strong running on the ball had the St Eunan’s defence terrified fed Aisling Newton for yet another goal and a minute later Geraldine Harkin finished a good passing move with a point from play to give Moville a total of nineteen and yet without a reply. Eventually St. Eunan’s finally replied with a long-range free from Danielle McFadden, but the ball was quickly back at the other side of the pitch and a point from Treasa Doherty and a goal from Marie Kelly had brought Moville’s total to 6-5 by the 20th minute. Treasa Doherty’s point added to that in the 26th minute and she added another goal and a point to her tally before the break. Before that Anita Doherty had also fired over and Moville went in at the break with 7-8 notched up and only one point conceded. St Eunan’s did manage to come out fighting again at the start of the second half but whenever they did manage to create a scoring chance found Deirdre Foley and Loirin Melarkey always on hand to deny their progress. That said it was Moville who were first to score again after the break, a free from Niamh Hegarty extending their already huge lead, but St. Eunan’s did manage another score in the 6th minute of the second half when Danielle McDaid fired over. It was their last score of the game and from then on it was more or less a shooting exercise for Moville. Further points came in the space of three minutes from Niamh McLaughlin, Stacey Cavanagh and two from Niamh Hegarty as Moville piled on the pressure. They added their last goal of the game with a strike from Marie Kelly that squeezed into the corner with thirteen minutes left, but there was still time for more scores. Stacey Cavanagh scored another good point from play and the scores came thick and fast with Anita Doherty, Maria Faulkner and Loirin Melarkey all scoring points in a minute. Niamh Hegarty added two more to her tally before the end and then Shona Kelly and Lynn McGuinness chalked up their final scores of what really was a one-sided contest. Moville will surely expect a tougher game when they take to the pitch for the final next week, but on this evidence it will take a team with fierce resistance to prevent them from taking the county title once again.
