MOVILLE retained the Ladies Senior Championship final with a hugely impressive win over Termon in Convoy on Sunday. Despite a late comeback from Termon where they rattled in four goals in the final ten minutes, the damage had already been done by some devastating attacking play from the Inishowen outfit. The women’s win set up the first part of a famous double, with the men’s team winning the county Junior Football Championship just a few hours later in Letterkenny.
Despite the early throw-in of 11.30am, Moville were quickly out of the blocks and obliterated the Termon challenge in the first half. The Sky Blues led by ten points at half time, and but for nine wides could quite possibly have been a lot more. County starlets, Niamh Hegarty, Treasa Doherty and Niamh McLaughlin were at the centre of everything their side manufactured and more often than not on the end of it too, tallying a combined total of 2-9 over the hour.
Aided by a light breeze in the first half, Moville raced into a seven point lead with just over 20 minutes lapsed. Niamh Hegarty scored three of those from placed balls, while strikes from Marie Kelly, Treasa Doherty, Anita Doherty and a great individual effort from Niamh McLaughlin meant Termon were already thinking of just what they needed to do at half time to make a contest of this final.
After an uncharacteristic wide from Geraldine McLaughlin, Maureen O’Donnell registered Termon’s first score in the 27th minute with a beautifully angled strike. Niamh McLaughlin, who had also lined out for the Republic of Ireland U17s over the weekend against Italy in Dublin, then added another point for Moville three minutes into stoppage time at the end of the half before they grabbed their first goal from the resulting from the kick-out. Treasa Doherty was quickest onto the loose ball and wasted no time in dispatching it confidently to the back of the net to leave a ten point (1-8 to 0-1) gap between the sides at the break.
Termon already had a mountain to climb if they were to get back into the game and their task was made even greater when Moville grabbed a second goal just a minute after the restart through Niamh McLaughlin.
Termon scored two successive points with Geraldine
McLaughlin and full back Olive McCafferty finding range with two fine efforts. Immediately after that, Donna Carr rattled the crossbar for Termon in what was the first period in the game where they had Moville on the back foot. While Termon goalie Martina Kelly saved a penalty from Anita Doherty in the 42nd minute, Moville soon edged further in front through another free from Niamh Hegarty and a third goal from Geraldine Harkin.
Treasa Doherty and Ciara Hegarty notched two more points in quick succession for Moville before Termon grabbed something the first of their consolation goals. Geraldine McLaughlin was finally getting the service she had so desperately craved for and in very reliable fashion, netted three goals inside eight minutes.
But it mattered little to the final outcome. Marie Kelly and Niamh Hegarty eked out two more points for Moville as they coasted over the line and despite Roisin Friel getting a fourth goal for Termon in injury time, their lack of firepower meant Moville were comfortable winners in what was largely a one-sided contest.
This Moville team, managed by Anthony Doogan, Davy McLaughlin and Margaret Mulhall, now go on to represent Donegal in the Ulster Club championship. They have a home draw against Tyrone champions St Macartan’s in the quarter-final in three week’s time, and will be hoping to go one better than last year when they lost out to Monaghan’s Donaghmoyne after a replay in the Ulster final.
