Malin...4-12 Naomh Colmcille...1-08 Report: Inishowen Independent A GOOD team performance from the Malin under 14 side saw them pick up the Northern Division 3 title with a comfortable win over Naomh Colmcille last Wednesday evening in Buncrana. In a very entertaining and fairly tight first half, Naomh Colmcille started the brighter and took the lead with a Conor Grant point, Grant responsible for all of the Newton Cunningham sides scores in the game. Malin responded immediately and found the net with their first real attack, Darren Mullarkey shooting home after good work by Christopher Doherty, Doherty and Adam Byrne (free) extending the Malin lead with points soon after. Naomh Colmcille, with the impressive Conor Grant orchestrating all their attacks, continued to probe and Malin full back Conor Byrne did well to clear the ball off his goal-line before Grant put a wonderful score over the bar from a free out on the sideline. Excellent defending from Malin continued to deny Naomh Colmcille who were struggling to turn equal amounts of possession into scores while the north Inishowen side were much more successful in front of goal, Chris Doherty hitting his second point before setting up Christopher McLaughlin for a second Malin goal midway through the half. Patrick McGrenahan put Malin 2-04 to 0-02 with ten minutes remaining but a Naomh Colmcille penalty, converted by Grant, brought his side back to within 5 points and they received a further boost when Adam Byrne put a Malin penalty just wide of the post minutes later. The sides traded 2 points apiece in the remainder of the half, the best of these an Adam Byrne free from 30 plus metres out, half time score Malin 2-06 Naomh Colmcille 1-04. Conor Grant opened the second half scoring, his free putting four points between the sides but this was as close as the game got, Malin closing Grant down in the second half and a second goal from Christopher McLaughlin midway through the half put Malin 3-08 to 1-06 ahead and effectively sealed the game. Malin added a further four points to Naomh Colmcille’s two before Declan Farren provided the icing on the cake, breaking forward to hit an absolute cracker of a goal from 25 metres out. Malin had great performances all over the field with their defence earning great credit for holding the Naomh Colmcille forwards scoreless in the game while Christopher Doherty was excellent at full forward, hitting five points from play and making the two first half goals. Naomh Colmcille’s Conor Grant was easily their best player and probably did not deserve to end up on the losing side. |
