MOVILLE made short work of Fermanagh champions Belnaleck in the quarter-final of the Ulster Junior club championship in Brewster Park on Sunday and weren’t any way flattered by their ten point winning margin.
Dominant from start to finish, Moville were stronger and more powerful than their opponents and from the moment midway through the first half that Nigel McMonagle found the net, there was only going to be one winner.
Moville had launched themselves into the comfort zone by the interval, seven points clear at the juncture and when Belnaleck were to be reduced to 14 players when half forward Dermot Lewisley was dismissed for a second yellow, the writing was on the wall for the home side.
The final 20 minutes of a game, which in truth always looked to have Moville as the winners, dwindled into tedium with Belnaleck clearly outgunned by a much superior opposition.
The Fermanagh champions were to have the consolation of a goal but this came right on the stroke of full time and it just about put a hint of respectability on the scoresheet. The goal was greeted with just the murmur of recognition for this contest had lost all interest long before the end.
Belnaleck were to begin sprightly enough and had a few minutes of early pressure but they failed to get off the mark and as the game settled down, so did Moville.
With a stronger physical presence an extra asset, Moville steadily shifted up a gear and when they banged in a goal towards the end of the first quarter it was a decisive moment.
Belnaleck were to work hard for the remainder of the half but their attack lacked incision while further back in their lineout their distribution was to be much too wayward.
The switch of Cane Connors up to the full forward line was an attempt to inject some penetration here but with the 37th minute dismissal of Lewisley, there was to be little supply channelled to the front line and Moville were to increasingly dictate from there to the end.
Even enough over the initial ten minutes, Belnaleck had a couple of attacks but already their lack of a cutting edge had surfaced. Moville were to go in front with their early scores supplied by Graham Doherty and John Faulkner and with ten points between them over the hour the full forward duo were to be a constant handful for the Belnaleck defence.
Belnaleck still looked positive enough with wing half back Cane Connors turning in a fine individual performance and there were some touches from Mark Gallagher and Ciaran McBrien but the team then shipped a mortal blow with the concession of a goal.
A Belnaleck raid was once again stalled, Moville broke quickly on the counter and the finish from wing half forward Nigel McMonagle was precise, his low shot speeding into the corner of the net.
That jumped Moville five points clear and that lead was never to be remotely threatened thereafter.
The Moville half back line of White, Brown and Seamus Hegarty, and the midfield pairing of Sean O’Hare and Malachy McDermott stopped most Belnaleck attacks before they even began.
On 17 minutes Belnaleck finally broke the ice with their first score, Cane Connors setting up the opportunity for Ciaran McBrien to shoot over and close to the interval, Mark Gallagher skipped his way in for another nicely taken score.
But Moville in the intervening spell had pumped over scores from Oran McDermott, Daniel Murphy and Graham Doherty leaving them 1-6 to 0-2 ahead.
Belnaleck rang the personnel and positional changes for the restart but these made no appreciable difference, the first score on the resumption going to Moville, Doherty slotting over a placed kick to add to his growing personal tally.
Ciaran McBrien lofted over an angled place kick but the game was drifting beyond Belnaleck and then came the dismissal of Lewisley.
Undermanned teams have gone on to overcome adversity time and time again but with Belnaleck struggling in so many sectors there was no question of this being the latest example of the genre.
In any case, hard on the heels of Lewisley’s departure any prospect of the depleted side raising their game was killed stone dead by two quickfire Moville points from the efficient corner forward Doherty and from Danny Murphy.
McBrien was to toss over a terrific sideline point for Belnaleck but as the final quarter advanced it was Moville who continued to drive ever further in front.
They duly swung their way through for five more points to establish a 13 point lead and that did not flatter them.
Belnaleck did notch the game’s final score, a right wing attack involving Mark Gallagher and Pauric Owens seeing a neat centre fisted home by Brian Lewisley.
Moville will play the winners of St Teresa’s (Antrim) and Butlersbridge (Cavan) in the Ulster semi-final in two week’s time. Their match was postponed to Sunday next in Casement Park with the Moville management team in the happy position of being able to suss out their opponents ahead of their semi-final meeting.
