Major telecoms injection for
Buncrana

BUNCRANA is to be
linked into the €30m Project Kelvin
telecommunications hub, it's been confirmed .
Inishowen councillor, Pádraig MacLochlainn recently
received the confirmation from Donegal County
Council and he described the news as "crucial for
Buncrana and Inishowen's economic future".
Project Kelvin is a joint €30 million initiative,
constructing a communications fibre optic cable that
will link Derry through to Letterkenny with a land
and submarine cable network across the Atlantic to
North America and linking onto Britain and Europe.
Cllr MacLochlainn said: "Project Kelvin takes
communications in the North West to a whole new
level. It is crucial for Buncrana and Inishowen that
we can avail of this infrastructure if we are to
compete for investment and create badly needed
employment.
"I can now confirm that Buncrana will be able to
connect to the infrastructure through the the ESB.
Backhaul connectivity to Donegal County Council's
Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) in Buncrana and
Letterkenny is provided by ESB Telecoms." |
Cllr MacLochlainn said
the huge £170 million investment planned for the
Derry/ Donegal border at Bridgend was "a perfect
example" of why Project Kelvin matters so much.
"In discussions with the project developers, they
told me that their ability to link the Project's
telecommunications was critical to their decision.
"This project will deliver the kind of international
telecommunications, companies located in London,
Amsterdam, Dublin and New York already depend on. |

It will provide
opportunities for companies in the North West
selling goods and services overseas but also improve
our attractiveness to knowledge-based inward
investment," he added.
Cllr MacLochlainn said the current economic
difficulties made it even more important for the
country to invest in the future. "This project will
transform how we connect to both North America and
Europe. It will open up new markets and new trade
opportunities for the region.
"Project Kelvin will provide faster broadband at
lower costs. This will hugely assist Inishowen and
this region in attracting foreign investment," added
the Buncrana-based councillor. |
