Tidy Towns boost for local towns 09.09.09

by Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent

AN increase of three-points on last year’s result of 291 saw Malin once again top the charts of Tidy Towns entries in Inishowen with another bronze medal winning performance in Category B of the competition.
However groups across the peninsula had just cause to celebrate as, for the most part, they chalked up increased scores, making the hard work by all of their volunteers, worth while.
The most significant improvement was made by the Ballyliffin Tidy Towns group who saw their tally jump by a massive seventeen points to give them a total of 49 points and earn them second place in Donegal in Category A behind Doochary.
There was also significant improvement made by Culdaff who saw their tally jump by twelve points to 240 this year in Category B.
Malin once again topped that category with 294 points, an increase on last year’s impressive total of 291. Clonmany who had increased their score by ten points last year after a drop the year before, maintained their steady progress with an increase of three points.
Perhaps the only disappointment came for the hard-working Moville Tidy Towns group who chalked up 260 points, the exact same score as a year earlier.
In category C, Carndonagh also increased their tally by a single point up from 228 last year to 229 last.

Meanwhile in Category E, Buncrana who have shown great progress over the past number of years, recorded another significant jump in their tally, increasing by nine points to a total for this year of 270 marks.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent yesterday, councillor Rena Donaghey, a member of the Buncrana Tidy Towns Group said they were pleased to have increased their marks this year.
“We are delighted that our marks increased this year by nine points. We know from experience how difficult it is even to get one mark extra so to get nine is fantastic,” she said.
However councillor Donaghey did express disappointment that the group’s efforts on tackling litter had only earned four of the nine extra points.
“We really did work hard on this and had people out every single say so I’d have to say that this was disappointing. Overall though we are very pleased and we are moving in the right direction every year.”
The local Tidy Towns group member maintained that the early adjudication this year might have had an impact.
“The report was compiled on June 22nd and this was earlier than usual so that might have had a role. However we are still pleased and we wish to thank everyone who helped in any way from sponsors, town and county council, FAS workers, volunteers and indeed everyone who helped in any way.”
Letterkenny won the county award in Donegal with 300 points, ahead of Glenties in second on 299 and Malin who were in third on 294.
