Buncrana councillor slates unfinished estates 19.02.09

A BUNCRANA town councillor has hit out at some developers who have "shamefully treated" people who bought houses from them. Cllr Daren Lalor said homeowners within some estates have had to wait years for their estate to be finished completely. "When people buy a house they presume they’re buying the whole package. Yet some residents are forced to chase up developers for the most basic requirements such as the signage on their estate, road tarmacadam or the maintenance or completion of green areas. These residents rightly feel let down and cheated," said Cllr Lalor.
He also criticised the local authority for not forcing developers to honour their commitments. "While Donegal County Council does have a ‘Housing Takeover Policy’, it is clearly facing huge challenges. At the January meeting of Buncrana Town Council I proposed that the Council also adopt a similar policy, but the answer clearly lays with our ability to place stronger enforcements on the developers."
However, Cllr Lalor acknowledged the "excellent estates" that have been finished to the

highest standards. "Unfortunately not everyone takes such pride in their work. Local authorities need the power and the funding to impose heavier penalties and developers' previous history should also be taken into account at application stage.
"Some of these issues can be addressed within the controversial Infrastructure Bill 2006," he added.
