Cash-strapped families fear worst
27.08.09
FEARS are growing
across the peninsula that the Government may attack
the most vulnerable by reducing social welfare
payments, according to Buncrana Sinn Féin councillor
Daren Lalor.
He said families across Inishowen were becoming
dependent on social welfare payments "through no
fault of their own".
"These same families only a short while ago were
contributing to our recent economic growth and now
the Government shamefully look likely to implement
savage cuts to their social welfare entitlements in
order to bail out their banker, speculators and
developer friends to the tune of millions," said
Cllr Lalor. |
"We are in deep
economic trouble, but let’s be clears about this,
the hard working men and women out there are not
responsible for bringing this State to the edge of
an economic abyss. In the blink of an eye we have
gone from boom to bust. The years of budget
surpluses have been squandered." Cllr Lalor outlined
his proposals for dealing with the shortfall in
public finances.
"Let’s end the misuse of taxpayers' money in
supporting private healthcare, private education and
the outrageous pay packages of CEOs |

of public bodies.
"Revenue can be raised through taxing those who can
afford to pay, through eliminating waste in public
expenditure and through putting in place a
meaningful job creation and retention strategy.
"These are the type of actions that are required if
we are to address our financial crisis, not
attacking the most vulnerable in our society," added
the Buncrana councillor. |
