iCARE centre "a great success" 05.06.09

AGM hears of successful year for local group

THE CHILDREN who avail of the services provided by Inishowen Children’s Autism Related Education (iCARE) have greatly benefited from many new opportunities and experiences, the group’s Annual General Meeting was told at the weekend.
Those in attendance heard that each year iCARE continues to advance its mission of providing a framework within which families, health, education and special needs professionals can access training, support, education and respite care.
In particular they heard that the Day, Respite and Activity Centre located at Ballymacarry has enjoyed great success in the past two years.
“Our children get great use of the facilities and equipment, providing respite for families. The goal of iCARE is to continue to make a difference to improve the quality of life of individuals with autism and their families throughout their lives,” spokesperson for iCARE, Liam Gill said.
Reflecting on the past year he said that children have greatly benefited from many new opportunities and experiences.
“They have been involved in successful outings during school breaks. They have really enjoyed the socialisation aspect of these outings and the trips have also provided much needed relaxation time for our parents and time out for our children.”
Mr. Gill indicated that the group had held two hugely successful fundraising events recently, a sell-out Fashion Show in October
Keith Duffy opened the iCARE centre at Ballymacarry, Buncrana, back in October 2007. He was accompanied by iCARE chairperson, Angela Tourish.
2008 and our annual Valentine Ball in February 2009.
“Both events received great support from the community and we would again like to thank everyone who helped make them a success. We would also like to thank the children from the Youth Muff Choir who organised a very successful fundraiser on our behalf, we are very grateful for all their hard work.”
The iCARE spokesman added that the new committee has established a whole host of new goals for the next year.
The new committee is - Chairperson: Susan McGrory-Kelly; Vice Chairperson: Colin Doherty; Treasurer: Rochelle Crossan; Assistant Treasurer: Jim Devlin; Acting Secretary: Liam Gill; Assistant Secretary: Elaine Clarke. (Inishowen Independent)
