Buncrana fails on affordable
housing - Lalor
02.04.08
BUNCRANA Town Council
has neglected its responsibility in delivering
affordable housing, a local councillor has claimed.
Sinn Féin Cllr. Daren Lalor said the Statutory Audit
Report of the Council highlights major deficiencies
in the delivery of affordable housing in the town. |
The report states that
in the case of four developments "no formal
agreement had been made between the developer and
the council". It also states that in one case,
planning permission was granted for the construction
of eight apartments but there was no condition
included on the grant of planning stating that
planning and development contributions would have to
be paid, nor was there a condition confirming that
Part V would have to be complied with..''
Speaking after the last monthly meeting,

Cllr. Lalor said he was
"outraged" at the manager's response to the the
statutory report. His reponse blamed the
deficiencies on "an oversight'' and he ordered a
full review.
Cllr. Lalor said: "This unfortunately confirms what
I've been saying over the last number of years, that
the Buncrana Town Council have no real interest in
delivering affordable housing to the people of
Buncrana.
"I have constantly raised this issue with council
officials both privately and through written
submissions in the chamber."
He said nine developments had been granted planning
permission last year and all of them were required
to comply with the Part V of the Planning and
Development Act 2000.
"The reality is, there are young working people
within our community who due to the steady rise in
the housing market cannot purchase a home. It is
they who have been let down by this council. We have
failed them at a time when Buncrana has seen the
largest growth in new housing in its history," added
Cllr. Lalor. |
