DONEGAL and Derry
airports will have to improve conditions and
assistance for people with disabilities and reduced
mobility under new EU rules.
Independent, MEP Marian Harkin said the legislation,
that came into effect at the weekend, represented a
"progressive step" by the EU.
“This measure requires our airports to assist
disabled persons from the moment they arrive at an
airport car park or other point notified by the
intended traveller. It means that persons with a
disability will have a far easier and much more
dignified passage through airports in the future,"
said Ms. Harkin.
The new laws cover people with reduced mobility or
sensory impairment, intellectual disability or any
other cause of disability. People with broken limbs
due to accidents are also covered under the
legislation.
Ms. Harkin added: “Over the past few months I have
been in contact with all of the relevant airports
and all have confirmed that they are putting the
necessary training and arrangements in place to
comply with the new legislation." |
