Judge offers sympathy to
crash families

A DERRY man charged
with dangerous driving causing the deaths of five
young people in a two-car collision in Donegal has
been returned for trial by jury. Brendan Henderson,
aged 49, of 16 Seven Oaks, Waterside, Derry, is
charged with causing the deaths of Gavin Duffy, 21,
his cousin Darren Quinn, 21, David Steele, 23,
Rochelle Peoples, 22 and Charlene O'Connor, 21. All
five friends were travelling together in a Peugeot
205 when the crash happened in the early hours of
October 8, 2005, at Cross, Quigley's Point on the
Inishowen peninsula. The defendant who was
travelling alone in his vehicle, was the sole
survivor of the crash. |

At a hearing last
month, the defendant indicated his intention to
plead not guilty to the charge. The book of evidence
was served yesterday on the accused and legal aid
was granted to cover the costs of a senior and
junior counsel and a number of expert witnesses. Mr.
Henderson, who has used a wheelchair since the
accident, was granted bail and remanded on his own
bond of €2,000 and an independent surety of €10,000,
to appear at Letterkenny Circuit Court on July 15,
2008. At the conclusion of yesterday's hearing at
Buncrana District Court, Judge Desmond Zaidan
extended the sympathies of the court to the families

accident. "Regardless of the outcome of this case,
may I extend the court's sympathy to you all," he
said. |
