"Car should have been removed"

NEWTOWN-based
councillor Francis Conaghan has said he believes a
car involved in a weekend incident in the village at
the weekend should have been removed by Gardai.
According to Cllr Conaghan, Gardai should have
ensured that the car, which was still in the village
on Monday, was either taken away by themselves or
informed the council to try and have the car taken
away.
Gardai confirmed that investigations are still
ongoing into the incident which occurred around 5am
on Sunday morning.
A Garda spokesman said that they had received
reports of the car being driven recklessly in the
village in the early hours of Sunday morning. |

“The driver of the car
was stopped and investigations into the incident are
ongoing,” a Garda spokesman said.
However while Cllr Conaghan praised the fact that
Gardai had responded to the call, he suggested the
car should not have been left lying in the village
over the weekend.
“The car has quite a bit of damage |
to it, there are
windows broken and other damage and I feel it should
not have been left to lie blocking a public footpath
all weekend.”
Councillor Conaghan suggested that if Gardai were
not going to have the car taken away, they should
ascertain who owned the car to have it moved, or if
that couldn’t be done they should have contacted the
local authority to get the car taken away.
“In situations like this there is always a real
danger that if a car is left to lie abandoned that
someone will come along and set it on fire. That is
always very dangerous but in a built up area it can
be very dangerous indeed.” |
