Cancer group welcomes new breast
surgeon
28.07.08
DONEGAL Action for
Cancer Care (DACC) has warmly welcomed the
appointment of a distinguished breast cancer surgeon
who has taken up his permanent position at
Letterkenny General Hospital.
Dr. Michael Sugrue, a native of Galway and graduate
of University College Galway, has now joined the
staff of the hospital's Oncology Unit. |
Dr. Sugrue is a
renowned expert in his field and joins the local
oncology team from Liverpool Hospital, Sydney,
Australia. There he worked for a number of years as
the director of the Liverpool Hospital Trauma
Department. He is Associate Professor of Surgery,
University of New South Wales and a Fellow of the
Royal College of Surgeons (Ireland) and a Fellow of
the Royal Australian College of Surgeons. |

"This appointment is a
major coup for Letterkenny General Hospital and DACC
congratulate the HSE Northwest management team and
the hospital management team for this excellent
appointment," said DACC chairperson Betty Holmes.
"It is a very good news story for the people of
County Donegal and especially for cancer patients in
our county."
Ms. Holmes said many people had worked very hard to
make the permanent appointment of a breast surgeon a
reality.
"Your support at the many events organised by DACC
over the last number of years has contributed to
this success. For example, when 15,000 of you stood
in the rain in the Town Park in Letterkenny on
Sunday, May 14, 2006 in support of cancer services
at Letterkenny General, such outpouring of emotion
and support could not be overlooked.
"Dr Sugrue’s appointment is the result of all your
actions. DACC want to thank everyone who contributed
in any way to this successful outcome and we welcome
Michael and his family to Donegal," added Ms.
Holmes.
DACC said it now looked forward to working with the
new surgeon, the rest of Letterkenny's oncology team
and management team to "further our shared objective
of excellence of cancer care at Letterkenny General
Hospital for the people of County Donegal". |
