Burt homes left without water 10.04.08

FAULTY pipes are continuing to leave hundreds of householders in the Burt and Killea areas without a water supply.
Inishowen Councillor Pádraig MacLochlainn made representations to Donegal County Council engineers this week about the ongoing disruption to the water supply and called on them to replace the faulty pipes as a matter of urgency.
The Sinn Féin councillor questioned how the local authority could justify enforcing directives on water rates, while at the same time not replacing some of the "antiquated or inadequate water pipe infrastructure" in areas like Burt.
"On three occasions in recent times, hundreds of householders in Burt and Killea have found themselves without the precious resource of water," said Cllr. McLochlainn.

"I understand that the source of the problem is repeated pipe bursts. The solution is clear. They need to be replaced. What is the point in enforcing European laws that preach to business people, farmers, community groups and schools about the need to pay for the full cost of water provision while up to 40% of our county's water supply is lost every year thanks to water bursts like those in Burt."
The Buncrana-based town and county councillor said it was "high time" councillors collectively made a stand on the issue.
"If the Council executive are telling us they haven't been given the money to do this from the Government, then how can the Government ask us to apply the directive they negotiated with the European Commission on water rates? The public are not fools. They want to see value for money," he added. For a related story, click here .
