Carn scouts aim to
polish off 100 cars
FIRST the town was buzzing with ‘A Shine of
Rainbows’ but now scouts from Carndonagh are
preparing to take a shine to cars of all shapes and
sizes this weekend. But despite their attention they
are all set for the car owners to make a clean
getaway. That’s because the local scout troop are
gearing up to operate a charity car wash in the car
park of SuperValu on Saturday when they are hoping
that as many as 100 vehicles will come under their
sponges.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent yesterday
local Scout leader Kevin Ferguson explained that the
charity car wash is being run as part of the
celebrations to mark 100 years of scouting in
Ireland.
He explained that to mark the 100th anniversary a
special two-piece badge had been designed and while
troop members had received one piece, they needed to
complete a special set of tasks to earn the other.
“The badge is an inter-connecting badge and to get
the second piece troops were asked to carry out
tasks using the number ‘100.’ Some troops for
instance released one hundred balloons, some planted
one hundred seedlings, we’re hoping to wash one
hundred cars.”
He added that as well as helping the troop secure
the badge, the charity car wash will also help the
troop raise much needed funds.
“We haven’t set a price as such, but we’ll be hoping
that the public will be generous with their
donations after the hard work the children put in.”
Mr. Ferguson explained that the Carndonagh Scouts
had 113 members aged from six years to eighteen, and
on top of that had a team of twenty two adult
volunteers making it the biggest scout troop in the
peninsula.
“We’re very lucky to have such a great troop of
members and leaders and I’d have to say we work well
with the many other groups in the area,” he added.
Saturday’s car wash is just one of a whole host of
events planned by the local troop over the summer.
“We’ve lots of things planned including a trip by
around forty members to the jamboree later this
summer to celebrate 100 years of scouting. Over
10,000 scouts from all over the world will be in
attendance at that so we’re really looking forward
