Carndonagh courthouse locked up
20.05.08
CARNDONAGH courthouse
has been locked up for a major facelift that will
bring the old building into the 21st Century.
Last month, Judge Desmond Zaidan informed Carndonagh
District Court that all sittings from May onwards
would be heard in Buncrana until the upgrade works
were completed. |
The Donegal Court
Service yesterday issued a reminder through local
radio to defendants scheduled to appear at court in
Carndonagh this morning, that their cases would
instead be heard in Buncrana.

solicitors, Gardai and
local reporters. It is often very cold in winter and
too hot during summer sittings. It has only one
public toilet with no handbasin.
District court clerk Val Cronin said the works at
their north Inishowen building had been in the
pipeline for some time and would commence shortly.
He added that the building would get a significant
overhaul.
"There will be refurbishment of the main courthouse,
improved consultation facilities and judge's room
plus parking facilities as well," he told Highland
Radio. Carndonagh court is also notorious for its
poor acoustics and it's understood the modernisation
works will include a new PA system.
Mr. Cronin said defendants scheduled to appear in
Carndonagh had also been personally informed over
the last two months of the transfer to Buncrana.
Meanwhile, Lebanese-born Judge Zaidan is on the move
from Donegal to the Kildare court. district. It is
widely expected that a Leitrim-based solicitor
appointed to the bench, will be posted to the
Donegal court district. |
